Ten Questions With Jesse LeDoux

Whoa, I almost forgot to post an interview today, and that would have been a shame, since today’s is so awesome.  I sat down with a guy I’ve been covering forever, and his stuff just rules.  Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Jesse LeDoux.

Age/Location: 32/Seattle, Wa

How You Got Into Doing Posters / First Poster / Years Doing Posters: I did my first poster in 1998 for a Karp / Silkworm / icu show my roommate had organized at the University of Washington. Excellent show, terrible poster. I didn’t become diligent about poster making until Jeff Kleinsmith and I started Patent Pending in 1999 while working together at Sub Pop.

Favorite Poster / Art Print You’ve Done: I’m pretty fond of the Giant Hand print I did a few years ago. Plus, it’s the only print I’ve done that has ever made it into a Playboy photoshoot.

Describe Your Creative Process a Bit: If it’s client-based work, I’ll flog the client with questions about the project until they’re tired, bruised, and sore. As they rest up, I’ll whip up a sketch for them to approve. They know they’d better approve the sketch or I’ll unleash a new round of questions on them. The strategy has yet to fail me.

My personal projects are attempts at creating a different world, into which I can mentally escape to. Surrounding myself with an replacement reality makes the negative aspects to life manageable. While my older work was more about putting myself in a different environment, my more recent work are attempts at integrating escapist elements into my actual surroundings (such as my print, “If These Walls Could Talk”).

All-time Favorite Poster / Art Print that Someone Else Did: ‘Blind Botanist’ by Ben Shahn. I really really REALLY wish I owned that thing. I’ve only seen it available once, and it was well out of my price range then. I’m sure it’s even further out of my price range now.

Music Currently In Rotation: Today I listened to Desmond Dekker, the Country Teasers (well…technically the Rebel, but it’s essentially the same thing), godheadSilo, then some NPR.

Last Print, Poster, or Toy Bought: I haven’t bought anything in a very long time (possibly the Kaws Stormtrooper while I was still living in Japan?), though Arthur Jones recently gave me one of his animal pack prints.

Art Hanging On Your Walls: I just moved from Providence back to Seattle last month, so everything is currently in boxes in a storage space. however, even before the move I kept the walls pretty sparse. The only things I had up were a print by Keiko Minami (the image used for the cover of her Bonheur monograph), a painting by Ben Shahn, a Dan Clowes drawing (originally done for the John Peel Sub Pop Sessions CD cover art, and Alec Thibodeau’s 2009 Lunar Calendar.

Upcoming Stuff: Currently working on stuff for my show in November at Rotofugi, art for a new Nonsek T-shirt channel, and a few other projects under wraps right now.

Words of Wisdom: Never play leapfrog with a unicorn.
