  1. This is either a total ripoff of, or nice homage to a classic New Yorker cover by Saul Steinberg called “A View of the World From 9th Ave.”

Not knocking the print, but thought it would be nice if Saul at least got some kind of credit, instead of a mere allusion too in the title (which doesn’t even make sense in this one considering the view only extends to the west coast of the US)

  2. Line work is nice.

    Pretty cool homage to Steinberg.

  3. Art history is full of artists referencing other artists, but you’d think a New York artist going out of his way to cleverly wink at a famous piece of New York art – albeit 40 years old – would find it appropriate to include “after Saul Steinberg” or something. I don’t find this “homage/update” necessary or new, despite Koren’s more assured lines and an astounding color palette and application.

What made “A View of the World From 9th Ave” a joyous celebratory cartoon was Steinberg broadened the horizons to become a citizen of the world. Not remotely surprised an artist from today’s Brooklyn has narrowed the viewer’s perspective, in addition to his own vision, and brought so very little to the table.

Shadmi should take all profits from this $55+$7 print and donate to Steinberg’s Foundation, which actually tries to facilitate sincere appreciation for the artist, as opposed to this “maybe no one will notice” tripe
