Arctic 50th Anniversary Print by Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey will release a new print this week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.  It’s an 18″ x 24″ screenprint, has an edition of 250, and will be $55.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to AlaskaWild.org.  It goes up tomorrow (Thursday, September 9th) at a random time.  Visit ObeyGiant.com.

  1. Beauty… I can hang that up and one day, my kids will go, “what are those?” and I’ll say, “Oh, those are animals that used to be called polar bears”

  2. now *THIS* I like
may play the refresh browser game to try and nab one

  3. Anyone that poo-poos this print has a piece of coal for a heart and blind as a bat. Great print. Great cause. Ok, ok… If I *HAD* to say something,,, I’m not too thrilled with the dingbatty decorations on either side of 50th Anniversary. There, I said it. But still a great print. See y’all at the races.

  4. Totally agree with 3d. I’m not a collector (or even that big of a fan) of Fairey’s, but I will be getting one of these.

  5. The vegan in me says yay but the artist in me says meh.
What to do what to do…

Hell with it. Tomorrow’s my birthday. Might as well be weird and try for a Shep.

  6. Im normally not all up in the Shep releases since I frankly find much of his work pretty, how shall we say not good.

But I can actually enjoy this one since its a nice photo and doesnt say OBEY all over it. Ill give it a go.

  7. OMG A obey print I dont totally hate.
    Good imagery
    worth the coin

  8. Totally agree with everyone thus far. Not a huge Shep fan, but this one seems like its for something good. Unfortunately i don’t think polar bears will be around for more than about 40 more years (except for maybe in zoos.)

My only concern is that is says “a portion of the proceeds” and not “all of the proceeds” go to the cause. Like Shep really cant afford not to make money on a print series for once.. That kinda pisses me off..

  9. @Natronik: yeah man I’m with you there. What I’d actually love to see is a 24 hour open release (numbered and signed after) and ALL proceeds going to Alaska Wild. If the dude did that I’d get all my friends and family in on this one.
Shit if he did that I’d stop ragging on his silly photo tracings every week.
Alas, it’s still an ok image for a very good cause.

The ragging will commence on the next release :)

  10. Shep has had a few prints where all the proceeds went to a cause. It’s nice he uses his fame for good once in a while.

Having only 250 kinda stinks. Hope he does an open blue edition or something. I’m from the AK, and I am 99% sure I’m not going to stand a chance at getting one of these.

  11. @Natroniink and Iron Jaiden,
Shepard Fairey has done numerous charitable prints in the last two years. More than any artist on here.
Probably part of the proceeds go to the photographer.

  12. Oh I know the dude’s done some charitable bits here and there but I still think he should do more. Anyone with that kinda money should do more. I work hourly and support a wife and two kids and somehow manage to donate a couple grand every year. If a goofball like me can do it wealthy people for DAMN sure can and I’ll ride their asses about it forever.

    Just how it goes :)

  13. I agree with Iron Jaiden and some other on here. I mean the guys has tons of money, I would say the least he could do is give us some sort of heads up as to what “portion” of the proceeds are going to them. Are they getting 75% of the profit, or more like 5%. Seems like he could afford to simply make a print for charity and they get ALL the money.

  14. I’ve never purchased anything by Fairey, but I actually think that my daughter would like this.

  15. … but then what if Dylan wants it in his room? The kids start fighting and the thing ends up torn in half and it’ll all be a big mess. :P

  16. Complaining is a pretty easy thing to do.
Why not complain about Ryden, Kaws, Faile, or Banksy, to name a few that make bank but don’t make their contributions public?

Maybe someone needs to ride you for being a goofball so you can donate more than 2k per year.

  17. Maybe he gives privately also? Maybe everything is being donated besides the production costs? Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Cool print. I hope to get one.

  18. Hey Taso calm down partner. Unless you’re Shep’s cousin or something you don’t need to stick up for him here.
He’s doin just fine. I rag on EVERYBODY who makes crazy dollars and squanders so much of it while a tiny chunk of that money could make such a difference in the world. That would include all of the artists you mentioned and all of the artists you didn’t mention. It’s a pet peeve of mine and it’s a pretty good pet peeve to have.
I can see you’re just being argumentative (I have a three year old, I’m used to it) so I’ll just leave you with a high five and a big ol’ wet sloppy kiss. :)

    XOXO

@Kneel13: naw, just damned if you don’t :D

  19. @iron maiden

I’m not being argumentative but it sure is funny when the tables are turned how people can act like a 3 year old. Cough, cough.

I do appreciate the kiss though.
    8-)

  20. fyi, the release has been moved to friday, september 10th.

  21. Well shoot. Was planning on some birthday luck to snag this one tomorrow.
Friday’s a crap day for me this week drops wise so I’m gonna pass.

Good luck scoring this one boppers!

  22. Friday is way better for me. Heck, maybe my DSL will be working by then and I won’t be stuck relying on my phone.

  23. like. but a lot more could of been done with this. polar bear cub being a ice burg or something silly like that.

  24. Not really a fan of this print. But off the top of my head I remeber Shep doing the Vote print for Obama, and at least 2 other environmental prints, plus that other one he did of the dog. Which is way more then any one else I can think of. Yeah its easy for the guy to do this, but it would also be a lot easier for him to not do a damn thing. Gotta respect the effort.

  25. Don’t buy the print and donate the whole 55 bones to a charity of your choice. Problem solved.

  26. @srdzevon: already done. :)

  27. LA KOSHER NOSTRA!

    lol
