  1. The acid mothers temple is precisely the type of poster that should NEVER be reprinted… I understand the reasons, I just think they’re lame. (plus the reprint actually looks MORE desirable to me than the first did due to the size, and that aint right). Lucky I sold my first months ago.. this second ed. bullshit has got to stop or this whole house of cards will begin crumbling even faster than it already is.
More artists should be like jay ryan

  2. Dude – A 2nd print can make your 1st more valuable.
It should also make you feel flattered that you have the 1st print !

Look at the prices of Mr Brainwash original Elvis with Machine gun now the 2nd editions have come out. Sky high.

Also its not always about the profit – If its a great print and enjoyable get it out there why have it hidden in Ebay folders marked for sale.

I don’t see any real big issue here as long as its marked a 2nd edition.

  3. Never heard of them but I see some great stuff on their webshop!
Btw I don’t like reprints or second editions but sometimes I buy them because I love the image, but for me collecting isn’t about having everything the fun of collecting is not being able to get everything and be really glad when you eventually do get the print you desire so much.

  4. bossk- you’re absolutely right, artists should definitely refuse money for their work. I mean, who are they to try to pay bills? Am I right? Am I right?

  5. Don’t call your stuff limited then, that’s all I’m asking…the label is used by many artists now as just a bullshit marketing tool to sell out prints faster than they would otherwise. And yeah, you lie when you say something is limited to ‘xxx’ copies and then SURPRISE, you make more.

I don’t care about the value of this particular print, I care about people treating these things like beanie babies in the future (which will happen if more and more artists don’t give a shit about integrity of editions)

And yes Mr. Doyle, IMO he should refuse quick money if it causes loss of reputation.. difference between long term and short term thinking. Make new art, don’t reprint ‘limited’ stuff. If he’s desperate for cash, of course I understand, but everyone doesn’t have to like it, sorry.

  6. I don’t really think this print was that big of a deal to reprint. The original had a tiny edition and is almost impossible to find at any price, and people just really, really want it. There are of course cases where it’s not ok, but surely there are some cases where it’s not as big of a deal.

  7. bossk-
Well, not to speak for other artists, and I definitely don’t want to start a back and forth on someone else’s thread, but it’s my understanding that the first edition there does have integrity- the 2nd edition is a different size and different edition. (and perhaps the colors are different?) Nothing happened to the original printing w/ the new one.

Other than this- more people can enjoy the print, and the artists can continue to pay bills that enables them to make more art.

I believe the truest act an artist can do for their art form is to make sure they keep doing art…and part of that requires paying bills.

  8. I’m the artist, so I guess I should say something here.

The impetus for doing the 2nd edition was two fold:

    1. A lot of people seemed to like the poster but it was pretty rare so doing a 2nd edition would allow more people to get a copy.

    2. We got a new Semi-auto press and we wanted to see how big we could print on it and I thought it would be fun to see this poster at a larger size.

That’s it really. Unlike some other artists, our posters don’t fly off the shelves so money is a concern for us but catering to collectors doesn’t really enter into our world view (collectors aren’t really into us) – doing good work is our main goal, and we are very appreciative of the people that do enjoy and buy our prints.

And thanks to Mitch for blogging us again!

  9. You guys deserve to be millionaires. Sell whatever you want…third editions, kidneys, stolen car stereos….what have you. Keep making cool shit.

  10. well – I think the he work involved is fantastic.
I think 2nd editions are fine. They are not competing with the 1st edition and everyone’s a winner winner chicken dinner – Great work !
