Shepard Fairey on NPR’s Fresh Air

Shepard Fairey sat down with NPR’s Fresh Air for a pretty lengthy interview.  You can listen to the entire story online, it’s pretty cool.  Check it out at

Also, here’s a pretty awesome article about how one journalist hunted down the original photographer for Fairey’s famous “Hope” image.  He is yet to receive any official credit.  Check out the article at

  1. O snap he flipped it horizontally! 🙂

  2. Congrats on ‘solving the mystery’. I know Shep is new to the American public but, there is no mystery. He works from photographs. The poster community has known this for years. He is a master appropriator. He is a master designer. He finds the perfect image to fit his message and then ‘does his thing’. I agree the original photographer should be credited. But, I doubt Shepard even took the time to learn the photographers name when he googled Obama to find the image. And, maybe that in itself is commentary on how ubiquitous the image searches has become in our society. Even the photographer couldn’t recognize his own image.

This OLD site explains it all . . . with photographs to back it up.

  3. UPDATE: “After my scoop “identifying” the source photograph and photographer of Shepard Fairey’s iconic HOPE poster, Purchase College digital photography teacher Nathan Lunstrum came up with a different image that appears to be a better and less convoluted match. If this new photo is indeed the real photo, it seems to have been taken by Manny Garcia, a Washington-based freelance photo journalist.”

And he’s sitting next to friggin’ Clooney. That guy is everywhere, man.

  4. interesting enough, super touch has posted a response to all this obey plagarism:
