Shepard Fairey’s Barack Obama “Hope” Original Added to the National Portrait Gallery

Well, looks like this was finally confirmed, and it is truly impressive and inspirational for artists everywhere. The U.S. National Portrait Gallery, operated by The Smithsonian, has added Shepard Fairey’s “Hope” original to it’s permanent collection. The piece was acquired for an undisclosed amount, and it will be unveiled on inauguration day. Say what you will about Fairey, but he has come a long way in 20 years of street art, an ascension no one would have ever predicted. Check out the article at USAToday.com.

  1. Very Awesome regardless of what others say about him loosing his roots and what-not. People are quick to judge those that are doing well and making progress.

  2. For a low brow artist to rise to this level deserves a tip of the hat in respect. This bodes well not only for Shep a whole genre of art.

So, tipping my hat and nodding my head in respect.

  4. low brow is just the younger generation’s high brow. I despise 90% of the obey stuff, but the last 10% is often phenomenal. My fingers are crossed that Shep will still do his decoder ring design concern art print that he signed up for a couple of years ago.

  5. despise is too harsh a word, i should have said dislike, i apologize

  6. I like how people always have to throw some personal comment about the artwork to make them feel relevant. Can’t we just say, “Good Job!” and just leave it at that?

  7. Good Job!

  8. No, this is a blog, people are supposed to express their feelings, good and bad. If everyone said “Good Job” and had the same opinion it would be a pretty boring world.

After all, isn’t art supposed to draw a reaction be it positive or negative? I for one like to hear both sides.

  9. that doesn’t make for a very good discussion group if people always leave the same comment.

  10. this isn’t a discussion group , its a public bathroom stall wall, y’all!

  11. Awesome.

  12. It is pretty awesome to be the first artist to have a Presidential portrait in the collection prior to the Presidency.

i never noticed the word “player” over the left shoulder. That’s pretty funny.

  13. I did really not give frank a chance last year. I have to say he is in a really good stance right now. So many people are jobless and broke and he is working hard and stacking that paper. ALthough I will never attempt to buy his work or spend ridiculous amounts to make flippers rich, I am going to think and make mad money like him this year

  14. So they got this one instead of the giant piece that was on display at the DNC? I thought that was the one they were after.

  15. My comment is awaiting moderation.

  16. You should really give proper grammar a chance this year, Sutton.

  17. Admin,
    nicely said.

Congrats to Shepard Fairey, the Obey Giant team, and Barack.

  18. uh-huh. Good job. Wish I could make some money like that.

  19. Why should people only say “Good Job”? To clarify, there’s a big difference between the VERY FEW comments that I’ve ever needed to warn people about, and only being able to say “Good Job”. Say whatever you’d like, as long as it doesn’t personally hurt someone else.

  20. Roy, yeah, it appears that way. All the major news sources are saying it is the image that has “Hope” on the bottom.

  21. Congrats Shep

  22. Wait, Abe Vigoda is still alive?

  23. Congratulations to Mr. Fairey, that’s really an incredible achievement.

  24. Thanks for the clarification, admin. It would have been cooler had they acquired the mural from the “Manifest Hope” show during the DNC. Regardless, having any one of them (Obama Portraits) added to the National Portrait Gallery’s collection is a huge compliment/accomplishment.

Hats off to Shepard. He did a great job with this campaign.
