Shepard Fairey’s Obama Time Magazine Cover

Starting today, you’ll be able to pick up Shepard Fairey’s newest Barack Obama illustration on almost  every newsstand in the world.  He has created the image for the cover of Time Magazine’s  “Person of the Year” issue.  Here is what he had to say about his involvement with the project:

“Tomorrow my illustration for Time Magazine’s  “Person of The Year” hits the newsstands. While I’m very honored to be validated by a periodical that is nothing short of an American institution, the moment is bittersweet because I’m very disappointed by Obama’s appointment of Rick Warren to deliver his invocation during Obama’s inaugural address. Rick Warren is against gay marriage and reproductive rights, and he does not believe in evolution (maybe he offers himself as proof of lack of evolution). I understand that Obama is trying to appeal to conservatives and evangelicals, but this move is symbolically a slap in the face to many people. Warren is not a uniter, but a divider… he is intolerant in many of his views. I still think Obama is the best choice for president, but I can’t condone Warren’s involvement in Obama’s inauguration, no matter how insignificant it is. While I’m on the subject of gay marriage, I will be donating a chunk of the proceeds from an inauguration poster of Obama I was asked to create to the movement to overturn Prop 8.  At first I was considering pulling my inauguration poster, but I think re-directing funds from it to put into a cause I care about is actually more constructive. Plus, I wouldn’t want withdrawing the image to come across as a blanket boycott of Obama.  I’m sure I will ultimately disagree with Obama about many things, but I think I will agree with him on more. I think it is important to speak one’s mind, but also to not let the narcissism of petty differences sabotage our unity and progress.”

  1. agreed.

  2. Well said.

  3. “I’m sure I will ultimately disagree with Obama about many things, but I think I will agree with him on more. I think it is important to speak one’s mind, but also to not let the narcissism of petty differences sabotage our unity and progress.”

Stick to this mindset Shepard, rather than assume the roll of the offended. I also disagree with Warren on a lot of things, but if either side assumes every move toward inclusiveness to be a “symbolical slap in the face” to the opposing side, then we’re not really interested unity.

And Warren, while he does hold those views, is much more known for challenging the religious right and their leaders to spend much LESS time and energy and resources on those issues and MORE toward global warming, social justice, and poverty in Africa.

And the guy is simply giving a prayer, its not like he was appointed to a cabinet position.

  4. Very impressed with Shepard for speaking his mind about this Warren issue. I’m also really proud of the way he’s handling the situation. Soooo much better to not pull the image and transfer some profits to the battle against Prop 8!

  5. Wow
That was totally intelligent and I respect him more for not using this moment to lick arse and self publicate but to once again stand up and be noted for his thoughts.

Highly impressive from a sticker maker and wheat poster maker.

  6. ” Tomorrow an illustration of me on the cover of Time Magazine hits the stands. While I am honored to be considered the “Person of the Year”, the moment is bitersweet. I am disappointed by Time’s choice of Shepard Fairey to illustrate the cover. Fairey is a serial vandal, whose wanton destruction of the property of his fellow Americans, time and time again, is an intolerable form of ritualistic criminal behavior, that cannot be permitted or supported. Fairey is not a uniter, he is an oppressor. His total lack of concern for the feelings and opinions of others, is both nihilistic and single minded in a way that is polarizing and, in itself, criminal. Were he famous for doing work that was requested of him rather than destroying the property of others, without warrant and then championing his numerous arrests, his work and opinion would matter. Rather he has placed himself on a pedestal as something of a vigilante with an opinion that anybody gives a shit about. I am glad he supports what I am doing but, c’mon bro, you’re a graffiti artist who weaseled his way onto the cover of one of our nations most iconic publications… shut up and smile.”

  7. When is Time magazine coming out with the alternate version where it’s blue on the other side and red on the other? Maybe withTime on the bottom to make it “different”?

  8. WTG Shep!

I’ll be running down to my local newsstand on my break to pick one of these up.

  9. Tony. I was thinking it, but just couldn’t get it out. Well said. Everyone just needs to back off and realized that he is just saying a prayer. He won’t play a major role in his cabinet whatsoever. Everyone has different views and everyone will not agree on most issues. But if know one is willing to atleast listen and disagree without being disagreeable, then, like you said, know one is willing for change or unity.

    give it a rest.

  10. Nicely said Shepard.

I knew Obama would make decisions I disapproved of, but I didn’t think they’d be this much so soon. Still grasping to hope of change, but that has already faded significantly…..

  11. Who does Shep think he is? Obama does not need Shep anymore….

  12. Frank thinks he is in his cabinet or something. When it comes down to it, He is now milking it for all its worth to the very last drop. Why couldn’t Frank tell time “Hey I made my mark now let somebody else take a turn” You guys have to admit that Ron English’s Obama Lincoln blows away Frank’s Image. He is the P Diddy of the art world and wants all the attention. The true art fans see he is so transparent and the little rich west los angeles geeks eat it all up. He totally lost his street cred big time. First he was against corporate greed and governmental figures and now he is all up in there shizzzy. Talk about greed Frank…..Take 10 steps back now .You made your hollow point.

  13. Ohh one more point. He is starting to make that Pres Bush smug look now. WTF Frank.

  14. I AM UNDECIDED AS TO WHETHER OR NOT I WILL BE PURCHASING THIS MAGAZINE.

  15. I am convinced Shepard Fairey will never be happy, being pissed about a guy who gives a prayer at a presidential inauguration seems pretty stinking “petty” to me, especially since he probably has never even met Rick Warren and just labeled him “intolerant” because he disagrees with him on a couple of issues, is this the act of a unifier? I say No, I have to give Obama credit for being a unifier on this one and trying to bring the left and right together, even if it is solely political.

The vast majority of America is against Gay Marriage. Not against Gay people, Gay culture, but against Gay Marriage.

Barack Obama has the same view of Gay marriage as Rick Warren, it didnt seem to bother him when he was making all the posters and trying to get the guy elected.

  16. Are there any famous Christian leaders that are pro-gay marriage?

  17. This is why I never argue religion. For the simple fact of who’s right? Including me. I have my beliefs but who’s to say I’m right or you’re right? If you went by pure numbers to see which faith is right Muslims would be right up there, but many people strongly disagree with their beliefs. This is a sticky subject no matter where you stand. If Rick Warren shows up at another event for Obama to do a simple prayer and not push his beliefs like last time how will Shep then feel about doing the print?

  18. Evan PaleBird, the thing about Christians is they believe the Bible is the word of God, it is complete truth, holds every answer, and the bible blatantly condemns the act of homosexuality. So for a “Christian Leader” to come out in support of Gay marriage they would basically be saying “I dont believe the bible is the truth” which would probably get them tossed out of leadership in the church.

  19. ok frank is suppose to be about screenprints and not about the churche’s business. homosexuals are being used by shepard for his own political and greedy agenda. He is now trying to get in the middle of this whole prop 8 issue but why didn’t he think of a print when they first introduced it.Only after the fact did he pay attention and that is a dirtbag move

  20. Tony Baloneey……….change your name. Your confusing me.

  21. Chuck-

Who are you to talk street cred? Shep has been putting up his work on the street for 20 yrs. All over the world… still does today… and better than anyone else out there… not only did he go big with his ICON, but he did again with his HOPE image… name two other images that match it. try… space invader? good but not close… banksy? dope style but where is the icon? his rat? puhleez… Shepard is as good an iconographer as they come.

name the other street artists who donated millions to a cause like this. Ron? Ha. Funny.

why not take pride that we have one of OURS who did good? someone who is using his position to take a position…

something tells me your a flipper.

  22. Yes i am a flipper and at the alva print signing i told him to keep the prints coming because it was helping me fix up my vintage jeep wagoneer I have two buyers that are too lazy too log on and get prints so i have two accounts set up and i have my wife buy them and sell them by the end of the week I turn say 90 into 250 by the friday not too bad

  23. It’s really mind blowing how ignorant and foolish some comments are. Chuck D give me a break, your comments are so silly and unintelligent time and time again, that it’s mind blowing you have not shut up at this point. “dirt bag moves” “”political and greedy agenda” are you kidding me?
This is a man that has done more for the movement of graffiti and underground art, then anyone in the last 20 years. All by simply speaking his mind. His “agenda” to me, seems to be a person who made a great living simply by doing what he loves, speaking his mind and continuing to do so. If you don’t like it, then that’s fine, speak your mind but at least do it in an intelligent manner. This is a man with a wife and children, speaking out about gay marriage because he wants to PROMOTE unity. So that makes him a dirt bag with some agenda? You reek of jealously and stupidity. Grow up, read up on the history of those you speak so negatively about and maybe, just maybe you will come to realize, not every successful person, artist or otherwise has some secret agenda. They just got there from hard work, patience, consistency and INTELLIGENCE

  24. So let me get this straight. Your motivation right now is to profit off Obey prints in the secondary market. Yet you have nothing good to say about the artist or products you intend to profit from? In fact you seem pretty adamant about discrediting Shepard’s efforts at every turn.

What I don’t understand is why you’re so hellbent on sabotaging your own agenda. I can only come up with two possible scenarios.

    1. You’re simply a bald-faced liar who likes to hear himself talk.

    or

    2. You’re just too stupid for your own damn good.

If I were a betting man (and I am) I’d go with a combination of the two.

  25. I am black, female, lesbian, and immigrant and I do not have an issue with Rick Warren whatsoever. If it were Jeremiah Wright, what would have been the reaction? It’s just prayer…and I don’t think that Obama should go out of his way to find a pastor who is PRO gay marriage. It’s just silly!! I don’t agree with Rick Warren’s views, but then again I’m an Obama supporter and he is also against gay marriage…so what has changed since the election? Nothing!! We shouldn’t demonize each other just because we have different views. Out upbringing, environment, and experiences shape our beliefs.

  26. well said gigi. you go girl! now kids back to my flipping stories. I once flipped a bootleg progress for $700.00 that i got on hollywood and highlands for $25.00 I said it was a test print that is why there was no signature and some idiot bought it.

  27. Thanks for all of your insight, Sutton. Really, I mean that. It’s not often that someone of your caliber goes out of their way to help simple folk like the rest of us. I feel very fortunate to have your commentary in each and every Obey thread. You really make me want to be a better man. Your poise, your style, your candor, your unwavering honesty; god, I envy you. I want to BE you. So much so that I have no other alternative but to capture you, skin you alive, and wear your skin over mine, only then absorbing your qualities.

    /sarcasm

Admin, please dust off your ban hammer and add Sutton’s new IP address to the blacklist.
