New Obey Giant Art Print: Cost Of Oil

Really?  Really?  After a couple solid releases by Obey, this one is (in my opinion) a major misstep.  “Cost of Oil” is set to come out sometime next week, so if you’d like one of these, keep your eyes on ObeyGiant.com.

…..Also, you can now purchase an open-edition glossy version of this “Rock The Vote” poster by Shepard Fairey through CafePress.  It is about 15″ x 20″ and can be purchased for $13.99 at CafePress.com.

  1. Yeah, I dont understand Fairey sometimes. Sometimes hes spot on, sometimes it looks like the stuff on Threadless.com that no one even votes on.

  2. After Obey Giant released their “Bitch” Hillary Clinton poster, i’ve turned right off those sexist guys. I don’t think i’m going to see a poster from them showing McCain saying “@ssh0le”, so that makes them sexist.

  3. The last 2 releases were prints from designs he did in the past that were already on HPM record covers or t-shirts. This appears to be “new” which may explain the discrepancy. Would have rather seen a large format silkscreen of the Rock the Vote than the Cost of Oil print.

  4. I LOVE IT BECAUSE I LOVE MY SUV AND HATE THE TROOPS. THE HEADLIGHTS SHOULD GLOW IN THE DARK.

  5. well… i think i like it. Hes never had a vehicle in a print before haha.

  6. At leas it’s completely new graphics and not re purposed stuff just to get a poster out. I like….and the team america movie reference is awesome.

  7. I like the poster, just not the headline. it’s confusing and there’s no bite to it.

  8. It further dilutes the “radiating red stripes” a la the rising sun of old Japan which were so powerful in “Guns and Roses”.

  9. I’ve never really gotten into SF. The Chill and Casbah prints were getting me and then this Oil one has lost me again, too.

  10. Now originally I think this was great – solid concept, yank, SUV, oil, blood
But why put the strap line on there – We do get it.
The background is also a distraction

I have read on other sites that people looove this and its an instant classic – For me its over done and dumbed down by the strap line

  11. bad, bad, bad. the message behind this one is just too subtle for my 2nd-grader sensibilities to comprehend.

  12. I was thinking about this piece.

Unfortunately for Fairey he is compared to Banksy, Political, stencil pop art etc.

Now imagine if Banksy put strap lines on his pieces. They wouldnt be funny anymore. They would just be naff.
There you go – he’s made this naff.

  13. FIRST OF ALL, I DO NOT DRIVE A SUV, AND I DO NOT HATE OUR TROOPS.

I AGREE WITH MANY OF THE COMMENTS HERE. IT IS NOT SUBTLE ENOUGH.

I WILL NOT BE PURCHASING THIS PRINT, BECAUSE I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS VERY GOOD.

  14. SECOND OF ALL, WHAT IS THE BLOOD FOR? I MEAN DOES HE REALLY BELIEVE WE ARE DYING IN IRAQ FOR OIL? LAST TIME I CHECKED IT COST 4.00 A GALLON.

  15. after the obama print spectacle shepard knows what he’s dealing with….

  16. Shepard’s work is usually successful when he focuses on one simple main image. I feel that the Rock the Vote poster is fantastic.

  17. Actually, Banksy did have a line on his “morons” print – but it wouldn’t have meant much without it.

Shep’s releases are really going downhill, have been for quite a while. Casbah was actually OK, but this one is wick-wick-wack.

  18. My next print will be Shepard getting hit by this Hummer in his Smart Car…

  19. his prints are all starting to look the same. which is good in a way, cuz if i liked his new stuff, i’d be pissed at the fact they all sell out in 3 seconds.

  20. rock the vote poster is now 19.99

  21. “My next print will be Shepard getting hit by this Hummer in his Smart Car…”

I wonder if there was no Shepard if there would be no Baxter Orr. Would be almost worth it.

  22. haha jim that makes it all worth it.

  23. DAN,

I just saw your post and maybe you’ll see this response, maybe not, but its worth a shot.

the Hillary Clinton BITCH poster was NOT made by Shepard. He would never put something out like that. It was made by an artist that frequents gigposters.com forums. It was very well made which is probably why you confused it for a legitimate obey release.

  24. EVAN PALEBIRD,

You are right! I’m glad you spotted this and took the time to tell me. The idiot poster maker who likes to rip off Obey Giant is Von Dada.

    ObeyGiant, I apologise.

    The rip-off sexist poster:
